Steel pipe flanges ANSI and ASME 16.5/16.47 are now found in the catalogs of many companies, and a quite reasonable question arises: what is the difference between standards, for example, ANSI 16.5 and ASME 16.5? Which flanges are the “right” ones to buy for your standard?

Standard 16.5 was first published by ANSI in 1973. Prior to that, it was the ASA standard. In 1996, the standard was changed to ASME 16.5. 10 years before the change, the standard included both and was listed in product catalogs as ANSI/ASME 16.5.

So what’s the difference ? The answer is no difference. The ASA, ANSI, and ASME have been constantly improving and expanding the 16.5 standard. The current and correct standard is ASME 16.5. ANSI 16.5 is an industry standard jargon and is still widely used today by architects, engineers, manufacturers and suppliers. And while ANSI 16.5 doesn’t technically exist, it’s understood to be another way of referring to ASME 16.5.
