Electrical steel is a key material for creating devices that transmit and convert electrical current. Thanks to its excellent magnetic properties, this metal ensures the stable operation of transformers, electric motors, and generators.

The optimal silicon content (2.4-2.6%) increases efficiency and reduces energy losses. Additionally, alloying the composition with aluminum enhances performance. At Aspersteel, you will find a wide selection of metal for transformers. We offer steel and rolled metal from the manufacturer for electrical equipment of various capacities.

Properties and main features

Transformer steel stands out for its low coercivity, high magnetic permeability, and minimal remagnetization losses. This is achieved through increased silicon concentration and special heat treatment. Electric current flows through cores made of this alloy with negligible energy losses.

Thanks to these properties, steel ensures equipment performance remains stable even during prolonged operation. It is also important to mention other characteristics. For instance, the grain orientation reduces specific energy losses in transformers, while isotropic variants are applied in stators and other units.

In what forms is transformer steel manufactured?

The alloy is produced as cold-rolled or hot-rolled sheets with the required silicon content. Cold-rolled electrical steel sheet has a directional grain structure, which minimizes losses in the core. Hot-rolled metal is used in transformers that are less energy-efficient but more resistant to mechanical stress. The primary material is an alloy of iron and silicon.

Cold-rolled and hot-rolled sheets are used in production to manufacture alloyed metal with excellent ferromagnetic properties, sulfur-containing products, and unalloyed varieties. Sheet metal products for magnetic circuits are also stamped.

In what areas is soft magnetic steel used?

The main industry for its application is the electric power industry. Soft magnetic electric steel is used in the manufacture of electric motors, transformers, chokes, generators, and reactors.

This metal is essential for the manufacture of cores, magnetic conductors, and other components of electrical systems. However, this is not its only application. It is used not only in electric motors, but also in audio and radio equipment, household appliances, and medical equipment.

Thanks to its excellent magnetic characteristics, transformer metal ensures the stable operation of electrical devices. The manufacture of complex units (e.g., dynamo installations) deserves separate consideration. In this case, the electromagnetic properties of materials are also important.

Key product characteristics

The use of silicon steel for transformer cores and other electrical elements is explained by a set of features. The main ones include:

  • Silicon concentration in the rolled alloy: 2.4-2.6%;
  • thickness from 0.23 to 0.5 mm (approximately in millimeters);
  • high magnetic permeability;
  • low hysteresis and eddy current losses in cores;
  • stable iron grain structure;
  • resistance of electrical metal to oxidation and corrosion.

The use of silicon steel for transformer cores and other electrical elements is explained by a set of features. The main ones include:

How electrical steel is produced: key stages

First, the blank is prepared—an alloy of iron with silicon and additional elements (e.g., aluminum) that ensure the specified composition and properties. This is followed by hot rolling, during which the metal is formed into flat rolled stock of the required thickness.

This is followed by cold rolling, which increases the density of the structure and improves the magnetic properties of the iron sheets. Particular attention is paid to the heat treatment of the alloy.

Annealing stabilizes the structure and reduces internal stresses. At the final stage, an insulating coating is applied to the steel sheet. The material prevents the formation of eddy currents and ensures high electrical resistance in transformers.

At each stage, the electrical iron is improved, acquiring the necessary properties — reduced current consumption and increased reliability of the magnetic circuit. Production is carried out in accordance with GOST. Precise control of temperature and strength limits is ensured.
