Duplex Alloy EN 1.4507: Properties, Applications, and Features

✅ General Technical Characteristics

Duplex alloy EN 1.4507 is a high-strength corrosion-resistant duplex alloy containing an increased amount of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. Due to its duplex structure (a combination of austenitic and ferritic phases), this material offers high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and good weldability.

Main Characteristics:

  • High corrosion resistance, particularly against chloride and crevice corrosion.
  • Increased mechanical strength compared to austenitic alloys.
  • Resistance to stress corrosion and fatigue failure.
  • Good weldability and machinability.
  • High thermal stability and resistance to extreme temperatures.

🔬 Chemical Composition EN 1.4507 (%)

  • Carbon (C): ≤ 0.03
  • Silicon (Si): ≤ 1.0
  • Manganese (Mn): ≤ 2.0
  • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.035
  • Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.015
  • Chromium (Cr): 24.0 – 26.0
  • Nickel (Ni): 6.0 – 8.0
  • Molybdenum (Mo): 2.5 – 3.5
  • Nitrogen (N): 0.20 – 0.30

💡 The duplex structure provides an excellent balance between strength and ductility, along with enhanced corrosion resistance.

🏭 Applications

Thanks to its unique properties, EN 1.4507 alloy is used in various industries requiring high-strength and corrosion-resistant materials.

Main Application Areas:

  • Petrochemical and gas industry (pipelines, tanks, heat exchangers).
  • Shipbuilding (structural components, underwater equipment parts).
  • Chemical industry (equipment operating in aggressive environments).
  • Energy sector (turbines, boilers, heat exchange systems).
  • Automotive and mechanical engineering (high-load components).

📊 Mechanical Properties

  • Tensile Strength (Rm): 800 – 1000 MPa
  • Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 550 MPa
  • Hardness (HB): ≤ 300 HB
  • Elongation (A5): ≥ 20 %

⭐ Features

  • High corrosion resistance – withstands aggressive environments, including seawater and chemical solutions.
  • High strength – superior to traditional austenitic steels.
  • Thermal stability – maintains mechanical properties even at extreme temperatures.
  • Good weldability – easily weldable with minimal risk of thermal deformation.
  • Durability – excellent material longevity reduces maintenance and repair costs.
